The Grimsby Grizzlies are working to uplift girls in basketball with an all-new free camp running this week thanks to a grant from Canadian Women and Sport.
The All-Girls Free Basketball Camp will run from Monday to Thursday at Grimsby Secondary School.
The four-day camp has been designed exclusively for girls ages nine to 12 to offer a “unique platform to engage with basketball in an encouraging and supportive environment.”
Organizers say the focus of the camp will remain on fostering self-confidence, teamwork and a lasting love for the sport.
The camp features an all-female coaching staff, including guest coaches from women’s university basketball teams and current and former Grizzlies players there to lend their experience and make the lessons learned unforgettable.
Speaking on the women-led team, Head coach and Vice-President of Grizzlies Basketball Natalie Walker says, “It’s pretty awesome to have an all women crew running the camp. I had one female coach my entire playing career and it makes a difference for girls to see that."
The Grizzlies say they are able to offer this camp free of charge thanks to a grant they received from Canadian Women and Sport in support of their commitment to the promotion of inclusivity and empowerment in sport.
They say the grant will “pave the way for exceptional opportunities for women and girls in the local community to play, learn and coach in the world of sports.”
